Athlone - A Wonderful Place To Visit

Athlone is located in County Westmeath in the heart of Ireland. Situated on the River Shannon, this beautiful town is rich in history and culture as well as having all the modern amenities. Castle Athlone is a thirteenth century Norman castle that sits in the center of the town. It has a visitor’s center that has exhibits and presentations of its long and colorful history. The castle has undergone many renovations to help restore its original beauty.

There are many ancient ruins and heritage cites in the area. One of the most famous is the Clonmacnoise Monastic Site. Here you will find the ruins of a cathedral, eight different churches and an ancient Christian burial ground. It is a very popular site for visitors. Fore Abbey is an incredible place. The Abbey was built in the 600’s and remains intact today, despite the many sieges that it fell victim to over the years. It is said that St. Fenchin himself constructed the Abbey and with the power of prayer raised the lintel stone above the entrance way. There are six other wonders associated with this site.
